Purplehouz Will Feature The Most Comprehensive Solo Exhibition by Khalil Ibrahim - 2nd July to 31 August 2011

Dear art lover,

Yes the news is out. We are now in the process of preparing for the launch of what will be Khalil Ibrahim's most comprehensive selection of artwork and his first Solo Exhibition since 2004. Over 200 pieces of Khalil will be displayed on rotation over this two-month long exhibition.

While our doors are not open to public just yet, we've had many surprise visitors who have popped in just out of curiosity.

We've overheard one walk-in say, "This is a Khalil's warehouse!"

And another, "I've never seen this many Khalil's in one place!"

Indeed. With 200 pieces of amazing artworks lying around, we are certain our grand launch tomorrow is going to be a blast!

Dear art lover,

We believe when one man puts his mind to the challenge, nothing can stop him. Today Alex Au-Yong completed a challenge many a lesser man would have not been able to see through. Not only did he put his mind and body to the task, he put his entire heart into it too. And he did it for the kids of the StART Society.

Alex Au-Yong was one man, running 100km, through 10 suburbs, for 18 hours in the name of charity.

From the streets of Putrajaya, down to Puchong, Sunway, USJ, Subang Jaya, pass SS2, Damansara Jaya, Damansara Utama, Taman Tun, on to Mont' Kiara and Bangsar to finish at StART Society in Petaling Jaya.

For the very first time, StART Society organised the Xtramile Run to raise funds for the StART Society's Music and Dance Programme which will benefit some 200 underprivileged children. The funds raised from this run will be put into supporting the children's artistic and creative skills.

Xtramile runner Alex Au-Yong made Purplehouz his final rest point before finishing his 100km charity run at the StART Society organisation. Needless to day, we at Purplehouz were deeply inspired by this morning's event.

We've had a full day at Purplehouz and it has been loads of fun! The artist we are featuring for the month, Lee Eng Beng, travelled down from Penang for his interview with TraxxFM. While it was his very first time live on radio, he nailed it. We are so proud of him!

Also, we double booked Eng Beng today as one of the interviewees for the Malaysian Contemporary Art Tourism project (MCAT). This project will feature artists, curators and museum directors, art critics and art collectors on ASTRO for the entire month of July in conjunction with the MCAT 2011 festival.

This festival is a 3-month long event, the brainchild of the Minister of Tourism Dato' Seri Ng Yen Yen, and is a project aimed at establishing Malaysia as the hub for contemporary art in the region.

HONG KONG - A painting by Korean abstract artist Kim Whan-ki has fetched the highest price in a Hong Kong auction amid growing interest in Asian artwork among international art collectors, an auction house said Tuesday.

Korean auction house Seoul Auction said that “Birds,” painted by Kim, fetched HK$6.9 million ($886,154), the highest price among 75 works by leading Western, Korean, Japanese and Chinese artists presented in the auction at Hong Kong’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

Another piece by Kim, “Mountain and Moon,” commanded HK$851,500, double its presale estimate, Seoul Auction said.

Among the works by younger artists, “Marilyn” by Kim Dong-yoo attracted active bidding and was purchased for HK$564,000, the auction firm said.

Seoul Auction also sold “Statue of Venus” by Yayoi Kusama, one of the most famous living Japanese artists, for HK$4.96 million.

Since 2008, Seoul Auction has been serving buyers and sellers who trade in the Hong Kong market. It opened an office in Beijing earlier this month in the art district of Dashanzi to provide better service to its growing number of clients in China.

Meanwhile, global auction house Christie’s said Sunday it has auctioned a video work by Paik Nam-june, the late Korea-born American video artist, for HK$4.22 million.

“TV is Kitsch,” created by Paik in 1996, is a robot-like sculpture - composed of 13 wood TV cabinets, two DVD players, two 5-inch TVs, four 9-inch TVs and seven 13-inch TVs - that plays two original videos made by Paik.

“At nearly three meters [10 feet] tall, the figure cuts an imposing silhouette but is equally reminiscent of the now quaintly antiquated past visions of the future, a Frankenstein creature cobbled together by our own collective consciousness, evoking the science fiction ‘clunkyness’ of such old Hollywood inventions as the robots,” said Christie’s.

The screens offer Paik’s signature manipulation of appropriated broadcast imagery, capping this masterwork as a mesmerizing and unabashed celebration of the advent of television and its ubiquity in modern culture, the auction house explained.

Along with Paik’s work, Korean artist Lee Ufan’s oil painting, “From Point,” was sold for HK$1.82 million, Christie’s said.

Lee is about to become the third Asian artist to have his work exhibited at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, following Paik (2000) and Cai Guo-Qiang (2008). The exhibition is slated to run from June 24 to Sept. 28 at the iconic museum in New York.

Out of the 45 works offered on Saturday, 42 were sold, including a work by renowned Chinese contemporary artist Zeng Fanzhi, “The Leopard,” whose proceeds will go to Nature Conservancy, the U.S. charitable environmental organization.

The top lot was a work by Chinese-French painter Zao Wou-ki, “2.11.59,” which sold for HK$40 million, Christie’s said.

(While important Warhols routinely bring in huge sums, the Artnet tracking does not show a meteoric rise. Amy King, who directs the company’s database, said that was partly because Warhol’s work had done well at auction for years and partly because the data took in the entire gamut of works auctioned, not just the blockbusters, but also many lesser items that may not have escalated wildly in price. The price booms for works by Gerhard Richter and Francis Bacon have been more striking. Bacon’s paintings often sell for triple what they did a decade ago.)

Mr. Clemente’s price history at auction is illustrative, but by no means rare. The data indicates that his work peaked in price two decades ago and has trailed off since.

Lee Eng Beng's watercolours are well-known and sought after by collectors far and wide. But it isn't his award-winning watercolour masterpieces that will steal this show because this opening show at the spanking new Purplehouz Fine Arts Exhibition Space is all about getting out of one's comfort zone and diving into the unknown.

In this solo exhibition, Eng Beng, who is one of Malaysia's most accomplished watercolourists, will showcase for the very first time his pieces created with acrylic on canvas.

This stunning collection is part of his latest work with the new medium - a way of challenging his creativity and turning his back on complacency. The result of which is a flow of inspiration and brilliant ideas captured on canvas.

Eng Beng draws inspiration from living in Penang. He observes the streets, the people, the chaotic life between the narrow alleys and busy intersections. He captures feelings, emotions and relationships between family members and loved ones. And all the while he leads a private the reclusive life on the island.

Eng Beng's art exhibition is the first in a series of solo and group exhibitions that will fill this art gallery for the entire year. Themed ArtBeat: The Pulse of Urban Expressionism - this Purplehouz project aims to promote the artistic talents of young and budding Malaysian artists to a wider audience.

Lee Eng Beng solo art exhibition consists of 65 paintings - a combination of his latest acrylic work and some limited pieces of watercolour on paper.

François Morellet’s neon lines show new side of French art to Korean public

You would be forgiven if 19th century impressionism and its serene works by Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir were the first things to spring to mind at the mention

of French art.

Overshadowed by the Young British Artists and U.S. pop artists who captured the art world’s attention in the 20th century with their bold and sensational works, French artists hardly stood out in the contemporary art scene.

Now with the art world shifting again, and unfamiliar artists from emerging Asian and Latin American countries grabbing attention with exotic pieces, efforts have started in France to shine the spotlight back

on French artists.

Franois Morellet, known as the master of geometrical abstract art, and who has held over 455 solo exhibitions around the world, is one of them. He was born in Cholet, France, in 1926 and is still living and working there.

It's an article about Ai Weiwei, one of China's most outspoken artist and critic and his mysterious disappearance from his exhibition titled ‘Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads’ currently running in New York.

Last October the leading Chinese artist Ai Weiwei covered the floor with his Sunflower Seeds installation: one hundred million tiny porcelain objects, each hand-made by a master craftsman, no two identical. Sunflower Seeds is a carpet of life, multitudinous, inexplicable, and in the best Surrealist sense, strange. The seeds were intended to be walked on, but further strangeness followed. It was discovered that when trampled they gave off a fine dust that could damage the lungs. These symbolic representations of life could, it appeared, be dangerous to the living. The exhibit was cordoned off and visitors had to walk carefully around the perimeter.

Art can be dangerous. Very often artistic fame has proved dangerous to artists. Ai Weiwei’s work is not polemical – like the Sunflower Seeds, it tends towards the mysterious – but his immense public prominence (he was a co-designer of the Bird’s Nest Stadium for the Beijing Olympics, and was recently ranked at 13 in Art Review magazine’s list of the 100 most powerful figures in art) has allowed him to take up human rights cases and to draw attention to China’s often inadequate responses to disasters (the plight of the child victims of the Sichuan earthquake or those afflicted by the huge fire at Jiaozhou Road, Shanghai). He has embarrassed the authorities and been harassed by them before, but now they have gone on the offensive against him.

On April 4, Ai Weiwei was arrested by the Chinese authorities as he tried to board a plane to Hong Kong and disappeared. His studio was raided, computers and other items were removed. Since then, the regime has allowed hints of his “crimes” to be published – tax evasion, pornography. These accusations are not credible to those who know him. It seems that the regime, irritated by the outspokenness of its most celebrated art export, whose renown has protected him up to now, has decided to silence him in the most brutal fashion. On the same day, Wen Tao, a freelance journalist and one of Ai’s partners, was kidnapped by several unidentified persons on a street in Beijing, but the police have refused to say who is responsible for his disappearance...

Rare Chinese vase owner dos a DIY on ancient piece

The porcelain piece is expected to fetch £50,000 at auction but in perfect condition it would have been worth five times that amount.

The vase already had a chip in its rim when the woman, who has not been named, knocked the rest off with a hammer to "even it out".

The woman, who inherited the item from her great grandparents who had originally acquired it, was about to throw it away when she decided to get it valued by auctioneers.

The vase, otherwise undamaged after the unusual re-modelling, was subsequently dated from the Qing dynasty, between 1821 to 1850.

The woman is now putting it up for auction with a pre-sale estimated of £30,000.

But experts say due to the Chinese market being so buoyant, it is a highly sought item by collectors and museums and is likely to fetch double that amount...

We weren't joking when we said there were a lot of things brewing on our end. With months absent from this blog (a thousand apologies for that), it's time to keep you guys in the loop.

We are building a NEW art space!

It's going to be all exhibitions and monthly art activities from now on.

NEW YORK, May 1 (Bernama) -- With the theme "Bangsawan Kebangsaan" (National Operetta), Jailani Abu Hassan, a contemporary artist from Malaysia is back to this city in an effort to showcase his solo work which he called "Cerita Kita" to the Big Apple audience.

The two-week exhibition, which kicked off on Thursday night, took place at Tyler Rollins Fine Art (TRFA) gallery in Chelsea, the famous area and also home to most of the art galleries and museums in Manhattan island.

Jailani, 47, returned to the city with 12 art works, comprising a new body of mixed media works on canvas and paper for his first US solo exhibition in over ten years.

His first solo in New York was in 2000.

Speaking to Bernama during the launch of the exhibition, he said: "I want to showcase my works on culture which is an integral part of me. Yes, I am also here (New York) in a quest for knowledge but my works are about our (my) story."

"I was born in a small village, and all of a sudden there was London, New York. I think it helped me to look at myself again…

“The market has clearly picked up again, and has certainly done so faster and more robustly than many predicted, but the frenzied pace of buying during the boom years has yet to be matched. Collectors nowadays are more guarded – looking, researching and demanding better terms before jumping in,” says art historian and expert on the international art market Noah Horowitz.

In his new book titled Art of the Deal: Contemporary Art in a Global Financial Market, Horowitz exposes the inner workings of the contemporary art market, explaining how this unique economy came to be, how it works, and where it's headed. MutualArt.com spoke with Horowitz about the book and his take on the current state of the global art market.

What is different about the 'Art of the Deal' than other recent books about the contemporary art market?
There have been a lot of recent books on the art market, many of them very informative and colorful. This literature has tended to be anecdotal in character and focused upon select “star” artists (Hirst, Koons, Warhol) and the practices and motivations of a thin stratum of alpha dealers, collectors and institutions; the toppling of record prices at auction drives a large quotient of the debate. Art of the Deal takes a more nuanced and academically grounded approach, uniting a range of topics that haven’t been widely addressed to date despite the key role they play in the current market.

What is key in understanding this new global art market? Research?
Today’s art market is more global and heterogeneous than ever before, yet it is often referred to as a cohesive whole when it is anything but. There is no single “art market” and generalities even within an artist’s oeuvre can breed dangerous misunderstandings. The sooner that people are aware of these particularities, the quicker they will begin to comprehend the market’s complex realities. Research is key, but seeing and experiencing work in the flesh is as vital as ever: art isn’t an abstract commodity and building good relationships and knowing the insiders are integral to getting your hands around the trade...

The Malaysian Masters art exhibition was launched on 1st October 2010 by Ambassador Dato' Mohd Yusof Ahmad (Director-General, National Art Gallery Malaysia).

Purplehouz also had the privilege of launching the latest publication by Professor Dr. Zakaria Ali, entitled “Malaysian Art”. It features a collection of essays from the Professor, spanning 30 years of his writings on Malaysian art and artists from 1979 – 2009.

Purplehouz Fine Arts Gallery and the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja (RCKL DiRaja) are pleased to announce The Malaysian Masters, a group art exhibition showcasing works by five renowned Malaysian artists whose works are recognized internationally. The exhibition promises to be impressive, featuring some never before seen masterpieces by the five fabulous artists – Tajuddin Ismail, Professor Madya Awang Damit, Khalil Ibrahim, Professor Dr. Zakaria Ali and the affable Patrick Lasak.

The exhibition which starts on the 1^st of October marks the first joint effort between Purplehouz Fine Arts and RCKL DiRaja, which has a long history of involvement in charity and community projects over the past 80 years; in working together, the duo have pledged 10% of the exhibitions’ sales proceeds to charities via the Kuala Lumpur Rotary Charity Foundation.

The Malaysian Masters exhibition will be in tandem with the official opening of Purplehouz Fine Arts Gallery in itself. Further enhancing the 2-week program, the Gallery will also have the privilege of launching the latest publication by Professor Dr. Zakaria Ali who earned his Ph.D qualification from the prestigious Harvard University, and is the only Malaysian to have done so to-date. The eloquent Professor Dr. Zakaria Ali is Malaysia’s art historian as well as an established author of several novels, and poetry anthologies. The latest book entitled “Malaysian Art” features a collection of essays from the Professor, spanning 30 years of his writings on Malaysian art and artists from 1979 – 2009.

Purplehouz Fine Arts gallery will host The Malaysian Masters art exhibition from the 1st - 15th of October 2010.
